Finding Healthy Snacks
For Safety's Sake
With A Wheat Allergy

A wheat allergy and gluten intolerance can easily be confused as most people assume they can be eating the same healthy snacks.

The differentiating factor though is gluten. Celiac disease, gluten intolerance and celiac sprue all translate to a sensitivity to the gluten in grain products.

With an allergy to wheat, this individual may have no problems with gluten, they are sensitive to another part of the grain.

Testing by a certified allergist must be performed though because it is possible to have both allergic reactions to wheat and a gluten allergy.

Common Items To Avoid

The following grains must all be avoided with a wheat allergy. Each of these do have proteins which are capable of provoking an allergic reaction in the sensitive individual:

  • white or whole wheat flour

  • wheat bran, wheat germ, wheat gluten, wheat berries

  • cracked wheat (bulgar)

  • wheat sprouts

  • couscous

  • tritacale

  • semolina

  • kamut (polish wheat)

  • spelt

Barley and rye - both grains which do contain gluten, are safe for anyone with a wheat allergy, unlike a gluten allergy.

Or determining and finding other grains which are safe for your consumption to use in cooking and baking can be used, preferably as flour blends for the best results.

Common Medical Treatment

As with its close counterpart, celiac disease, the only recommended treatment plan is the avoidance of any food containing wheat. There is no medications to treat the symptoms of a wheat allergy. Therefore your present and future health is totally dependent on how much you are willing to remove all wheat products from your diet.

Temptation Comes In The Form Of...

Somehow the American diet has transformed itself into two food items - bread and pasta.

Bread is very important to most people but probably no food in America is more important than pasta.

Many things people can accept that they may no longer consume, but pasta always shows an immediate, almost physical reaction.

The good news is there are forms of pasta available on the market. Many varieties have a good taste and flavor.

Check around and many of the larger chain grocery stores, specialty shops and health food stores are now carrying an assortment of alternative pasta products safe for those allergic to wheat.
