With some quick common substitutions to use during cooking and baking, sugarfree snacks can be just as good or better than its regular sugar-laden counterpart. Common Substitutions For Sugar Free Cooking and BakingFrozen juice concentrates, such as apple juice and white grape juice concentrate are available all year round. Scoop out what you need and then place the rest back in the freezer. Read labels though- some kinds now state "all natural" but they do include sugar.Unsweetened fruit juice in cans and unsweetened applesauce are also available as a substitute. Again read ingredient labels. It has been noted some labels have sucrose on the ingredient label. This is just another form of sugar. - 5 packets of unflavored gelatin
In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of juice with the gelatin. Stir. Bring one cup of juice to a boil in a small saucepan, stir in gelatin mixture. Add remaining juice and stir till gelatin is completely dissolved. Pour into an 8X8 pan (or candy molds) and chill till set. Use cookie cutters to make cute shapes. This will keep solid for approximately 4-5 hours without refrigeration.
Fruit Leather RollsThis is the simple way of making these without the extra expense of buying them at a store.- Clean and slice fruit of your choice to make 2 cups of puree.
- 1 T. Lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Puree sliced fruit. Add cinnamon and lemon juice to blender. Blend again. Spread mixture evenly in a 10x15 pan. Place in a 175 degree oven (leave door ajar) for 3 hours. If bottom is still wet, turn the fruit over and dry longer. Cut into 20 strips and cover each with plastic wrap. Roll up (with plastic in layers). Store in an airtight container.
Homemade Peanut ButterFast and simple but so much more flavor than store brands. Make sugar free snacks nutty!- 1 cup raw peanuts or any nut of your choice
- 1 T. vegetable oil
Place nuts in blender jar and blend till a fine dust. As blender is running slowly add the oil and continue blending until smooth. Store in an airtight container.
Fruity Whip-pee CreamIf you just love the aerosol cans- here is one step better.- 1/2 cup sliced fruit
- 1/2 pint heavy cream
Blend the sliced fruit till smooth. Add the cream and whip until soft peaks form. Use as a replacement for anywhere you would use whipped cream.
Spreadable PeachesNow enjoy that fresh from the vine flavor all year round. Sugar free snacks don't have to be bland, they can burst with fruit flavors!- 16 oz. can sliced peaches, packed in its own juice
- 1 packet unflavored gelatin
- 2/3 cup unsweetened apple juice
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Drain all of the peach juice into the blender jar. Sprinkle in the gelatin powder and allow to set 2-3 minutes. In a small saucepan, bring the apple juice to a boil. Add this to the blender jar with gelatin mixture. Blend on high till dissolved. Add peaches and cinnamon and blend until smooth. Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate until set. Allow to come to room temperature before serving for best flavor.
Use as a topping for biscuits, bagels, muffins, ice cream and shortbread etc. Unlimited Jam SauceForget the ho-hum 100% maple syrup. Now you can have unlimited variations of fruity jam sauce for pancakes, waffles, or ice cream toppings. Also stir it into hot breakfast cereal for a new treat!- 1/4 cup unsweetened fruit jam(from a jar)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
In a small saucepan, combine the jam and water. Stir and boil for two minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Serve hot or cold. Sugarfree Pineapple Slush SyrupAnother good breakfast treat for pancakes or waffles. This is also excellent as a topping for a dinner time ham slice. Sugar free snacks are not just for snack-time anymore!- 8 oz can crushed pineapple
- 3/4 tsp. cornstarch
- 1/4 cup cold water
- pinch of cinnamon
Combine all ingredients and blend on high till pureed. Transfer to a saucepan and cook over medium heat till thickened, stirring continuously. Serve warm for best flavor. Orangesicle SipperA great summertime treat for hot days!- 3 cups cold water.
- 1- 6 oz can frozen unsweetened orange juice concentrate, thawed
- 1 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk
- 1 medium banana
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Serve cold. Touch Of Spice CiderJust a hint of the fall season in a glass.- 1 1/2 cups apple cider
- 3/4 cup water
- Pinch each of cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg
In a saucepan, simmer all ingredients together for 10 minutes. Serve warm. Lazy Way Lemonade- 1 T. lemon juice
- 2 T. white grape juice
- 1 1/2 cups cold water.
Shake all ingredients together. Chill. Serve. Six Fruit SmoothieA full day's supply of fruits in one glass.- 1 banana
- 1 apple- peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 pear- peeled, cored and sliced
- 3/4 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
- 2 T. raisins
- 1 small orange, separated into wedges- optional
Blend first six ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour into a glass. Garnish rim with orange wedge if desired.
