Spices and Seasoning Blends:
Flavor Enhancers

Many spices and seasoning blends have to be avoided because it is impossible to verify their safety. Most people do not realize though how simple it can be to make your own though right at home.

Recipe Book

All-Purpose Spice Blend-Seasoned Salt

Good for sprinkling on meat and vegetables before cooking.

  • 2 T. salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/4 tsp. tumeric
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. potato starch

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Store tightly covered.

Ground Mustard

Dry mustard can be made by grinding mustard seeds in a small grinder.

Taco Seasoning Mix

  • 2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. chili powder, homemade
  • 1/2 tsp. dried red pepper flakes, crushed
  • 1/4 tsp. oregano
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. tapioca starch
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin

Mix all ingredients together. Store in an airtight container.

Or here is another Taco Seasoning mix with a slightly hotter, more pungent flavor than the one above.

Taco Seasoning Mix II

  • 2 tsp homemade chili powder (see below)
  • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp onion granules
  • 3 1/4 tsp garlic granules
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt, optional
Combine all the ingredients and use as a direct replacement for 1 packet of the store-bought variety when cooking. For storing, close in a sealed tight container.

Homemade Chili Powder

Chili powder from a store is not just ground up peppers. It is an assortment of all kinds of fillers and additives. Use the following recipe for a homemade version, not only good but actually good for you too.

  • 6 T. paprika
  • 2 T. tumeric
  • 1 T. dried red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp ground cayenne
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves

Combine and stir well. Store in a sealed tight container out of heat and light.

Dry Onion Soup Mix

Just love those boxes of onion soup as a quick picker-upper for many meat and vegetable casseroles? But have you ever stopped first and read that label? Don't or you won't ever buy it again (that is if you can understand half the words on the label).

Store in a sealed container out of the heat and light.

  • 3 T. dry onion flakes
  • 4 tsp onion granules
  • 1/2 tsp celery salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp (unrefined) sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic granules

    Homemade Bouillon

A pot of soup or stew, started from scratch, just needs the extra flavor enhancement which comes from bouillon but the grocery store varieties are sky-high in MSG. Why, you ask? Because the MSG is what is giving it that kick in the flavor. But making your own, without all these additives is rather time-consuming but oh so much better. Pick a day when you are going to be home in your kitchen anyway and place this one pan on a burner and just let it stew away.

    • 3 cups fresh finely diced celery, tightly packed
    • 3 cups fresh finely diced carrots
    • 2 medium onions, diced finely
    • 2 T. sea salt
    • 1/2 lb. meat of your choice - ground beef/ ground chicken/ or ground turkey (grass fed from the local farmer with no added fillers)

Add all the ingredients to a saucepan (no liquid) and cover. Turn on the lowest heat setting and let stew for approximately 2 hours, stirring twice. After 2 hours, pour into the blender and process till smooth. Pour into ice trays and freeze till solid. Each cube to use needs 1/2 cup water.
