Old Fashioned Candy Store:
Taste Your Memories Of Some
The Finest Healthy Snacks

Yes, to admit that you remember the old fashioned candy store is also an admission of your current age group. But in the context of admitting that this particular time in your life was special, you open the doors of imagination to your children or grandchildren by allowing them to learn how this special place in your life helped to shape your childhood dreams and fantasies for years to come.

In our younger years some 40 or 50 years ago, television was often not available to many families. There was no such thing as computers, ipods, cell phones, hand-held games or playstations. The only entertainment venue during this time was, for the very fortunate, the radio. Whole families would sit in their living rooms and be enthralled by the music and talk coming from the box on the end table called a radio.

Outside of the home, down on the street corner was a small combination store holding the soda fountain, ice cream parlour, Rx and toiletries, small grocery mart and the all important old fashioned candy store. Rows and rows of baskets, barrels and jars holding some of the sweetest confections such as mary janes, root beer barrels, string licorice, lemon drops, lollipops plus many more. With a little time and perseverance you could also find a few of those healthy snacks. Whole families met, talked and socialized in these aisles as if this was the town hall meeting room.

Lives were discussed, additions to many families was planned (whether by marriage or birth), medical conditions were healed by swapping home remedies between neighbors, church socials and picnics were organized and each and every day's events were discussed so the greatest amount of benefit could be reaped by all.

Life seemed to move at a much slower pace except hard manual labor was prevalent during each and every day. The end of the week always arrived by Friday evening though, so the trip to the local grocer was the highlight of the week. Groceries were selected, tabulated and the transaction was finalized. Meanwhile, us kids waited with anticipation and expectation building with each and every passing moment. The old-fashioned candy store was three aisles over and we were each allowed our own bright shiny penny.

With penny in hand, jar after jar and basket after basket had to be examined. This, right at that particular moment was the most important decision of our young lives'! In today's world, a penny is almost meaningless, but at the old fashioned candy store a penny was enough to buy a whole bag of candy if one made the right selections. Or if you preferred, you could use that penny to buy one extra special item of your choice.

In today's world it may seem ridiculous, but each and every Friday night, for those few moments in that aisle of that old fashioned candy store, this weekly decision was the most momentous decision of our young lives.
