Line a 9X9 pan with wax paper. Set aside. In a medium plastic bowl, microwave chocolate and shortening on high for one minute. Remove from microwave and stir thoroughly. Return to microwave and heat at half power for 30 second intervals. Remove and stir after every 30 seconds. Continue several times till chocolate is completely smooth and melted. Stir in vanilla. Gradually stir in 10x sugar. If mixture becomes too thick, knead with hands. Spread into the prepared pan, top with nuts if desired. Cover and refrigerate until firm. Break into pieces.
