Healthy Snack Ideas:
The Art of Finding Delicious And

There is no shortage of healthy snack ideas for people who must be concerned about what they eat. Whether the reason is an allergy, a disease or a desire to reel in an unruly toddler with a serious sweet tooth, decent snacks are easier to find and make than many realize.

Selecting the right healthy snacks can prove to be the real trick. Many products that appear to be healthy may have ingredients that are dangerous to some. Loading up on knowledge about foods and food products is important regardless of the reason to eat healthier.

Knowledge is especially vital when medical problems are prompting the need to eat better. The key here is reading labels or preparing foods personally to ensure that taboo ingredients are not included in the mix.

Who Needs Healthier Snacks?

Snacking is an important part of a daily diet. When the right foods are selected, they can boost overall nutrition and add fuel for the body. Healthy foods to snack on are smart for everyone, especially for toddlers and kids, but there are certain conditions that prompt a real need to exercise caution. These do include:

Reading Labels Is A Must

While many snacks are labeled as low carb, sugar free, diabetic, low calorie or low fat, this doesn’t mean they aren’t loaded with other undesirable items. The front packaging can tell consumers a little about a product, but only the nutritional label and ingredient labels will tell the whole story.

When reading labels to determine if a snack is healthy and right for a particular person, make sure you understand the information on the label:

  • The serving size

  • The nutritional value

  • The carbohydrates included

  • The ingredients used

  • The sodium levels

  • Any “code words” that might be in the labels that could indicate the presence of an unwanted ingredient.

Fast Snacks That Are Healthy

While there are people that cannot eat certain healthy foods due to medical conditions, a variety of snacks exist that are ready to go or easy to make. Some of the healthier options for toddlers, kids and adults alike include:

  • Fresh fruit, sugarfree gelatin cups, frozen popsicles (with <3g sugar per serving or with <70 calories per 4 oz serving). You can easily make your own here also by freezing 100% unsweetened fruit juice in a dixie cup, add a popsicle stick when semi-solid and enjoy. Often, adults enjoy iced water drinks with flavored ice cubes. Just pour the juice in ice cube trays and freeze.

  • Homemade trail mix with any allergens not included, you can use unsalted nuts or seeds, plain popcorn (or seasoned with herbs, parmesan cheese or sprinkled with cinnamon) with a homemade dip, 70% dark chocolate bits, whole grain cracker bites (with less than 2g fat/serving)

  • Raw vegetables

  • Whole grain flat breads, whole grain crackers (less than 2g fat/serving or Ritz 100 calorie snack packs of crackers and pretzels - verify allergens first, low-fat or nonfat cheese (less than 6g fat/serving) or low-fat skim mozzarella sticks

  • Yogurt(preferably the fat free variety), or purchase a container of Jello sugarfree Mousse cups, push a stick down through the top seal and freeze

  • Sugar free or low carb baked goods, candies and snacks (<3g fats/serving) used to satisfy a sweet tooth which should be free of artificial sweetener. Or find some snack boxes of cereal with >3g fiber/ box and <1g fat and <5g sugar/box

So as you can see, healthy snack ideas are truly widely available, but it does take dedication to find and consume them. Learning how to read labels can guide the process and help you make better choices.
