Finding Dye Free
Candy And Healthy Snacks

While it might seem impossible to find dye free candy and healthy snacks, there are options out there. No matter the motivating factor for avoiding dyes, alternatives do exist.

Medical concerns are among the biggest reasons people seek to avoid food dye in their own or their children’s diets. Red food dye, among others, is linked with sensitivity and allergies. Dyes have also been linked to ADHD and hyperactivity. Other reasons for avoiding dyes exist, including a desire to simply eat chemical-free foods.

Clearing out dyes from a diet entirely demands careful attention to foods selected or by learning to use all natural food coloring by preparing your snacks at home. There are quite a number of foods you must avoid. Fortunately, there are dye free candy options.

Exploring Medical Reasons To Avoid Dye

When food allergies are present, the symptoms alone can be cause enough to avoid dyes. Allergic reactions to dyes can vary greatly in severity. These allergens can also create a wide variety of symptoms in sufferers including:

  • Skin rashes and hives

  • Swelling in areas of contact

  • Stomach complaints

  • Severe reactions, including anaphylaxis

A number of studies have also linked the use of dyes in food to ADHD and other hyperactivity disorders. If this is a concern with your child, avoiding dyes is considered a must by many in the medical community.

If medical reasons motivate the need to find snacks and candy without dyes, careful reading of labels must become a continuous habit. A lot of seemingly harmless snacks may contain dye and spark this sensitivity.

Foods To Avoid

Snack foods can be rather tricky in their use of food dye. While some candy and snack food items might not appear to require the use of dyes, read the labels and often times one artificial color or another will be found. It is not uncommon for dyes to be found in varying combinations in such things as:

  • Sodas

  • Candy bars

  • Hard candy

  • Some chip-type snacks

  • Yogurt

  • Ice cream

  • Gum

Snacks And Candy That Are Acceptable

While dyes are common in a variety of foods, it is possible to find snack items that do not contain any artificial coloring. Some of the options out there that can enable people with allergies or ADHD concerns to enjoy snacks include:

  • Fresh fruits

  • Homemade baked goods and homemade candies

  • Some organic candies and snacks

  • Prepackaged candy and snacks that are clearly labeled dye free

Dye free candy and snacks are still available. Just because medical concerns are present, with careful planning and constant scrutiny, no adult or child must give up on finding safe snacking alternatives completely.

Can You Help Us Add To Our List Of Safe Alternatives?

Some manufacturers really try so hard to trick us mothers into thinking "this item should be safe. It's all white. But check that ingredient label and it is full of dyes.(think of marshmallows) Why did they do that?

Who has the time and energy anyway to read all those labels in the supermarket? Can anyone please help?
