Diabetic Candy:
Controlling Blood Sugar With
Healthy Snacks

There are two primary reasons for a surge in the popularity of sugarfree diabetic candy. These are:

  • to help control the amount of calories a person eats to either maintain or help lose weight

  • to help control or reduce blood sugar levels in a person with diabetes

Both of these benefits, with time and practice, are possible to obtain by adding sugarfree healthy snacks into your normal diet.

How To Satisfy My Sweet Tooth

Being a diabetic, or just trying to reduce the concentrations of sugar in your diet, is possible by substituting some more health-conscious alternatives.

How about trying some sugarfree popsicles, one or two diet sodas, fat-free ice cream or frozen yogurt. There is also a full spectrum of sugarfree candies available now on the marketplace. From the sugarfree gummi's, fruit slices, licorices to chocolates. You can also divide or share your regular desserts into smaller serving sizes.

A quick burst of energy can be obtained from the many varieties of sugarfree hard candies that are available which start at only 2-3 calories per piece. The higher fat versions, like a sugarfree pecan caramel patty has about one-third fewer calories than the regular version. If eaten in controlled moderation, sugarfree candy is a lower calorie small indulgence without all of the guilt.

Planning A Birthday Party For A Diabetic

Don't try to restrict yourself or a loved one on their special day. With some careful planning and a few substitutions, it is possible to still have some of a birthday's special treats.

Birthday parties equal birthday cake. The two are synonymous in our society. To reduce the sugar try an angel food cake. Just remember to hold the frosting. To "icing your cake" , try a container of non-dairy whipped topping sprinkled with a packet of powdered sugarfree Jello or a crushed sugarfree candy bar. Both of these will give your cake that festive party look by adding color and great taste.

Favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza etc. can still be served. Just reduce the quantity eaten by reducing the serving size to one for each guest and filling in your menu with plenty of other "safe foods" from the fruits and vegetables category.

Top the event off with a sugarfree soda or some 100% fruit juice, a small serving of sugarfree ice cream or popsicle, or diabetic candy and your party has now maintained its festive atmosphere without the "overload" of carbohydrates which makes your blood sugar soar!

Careful Planning Can Give Impressive Results

Keep in mind, as with all new ventures, time and preparation are the keys to any new positive goal in life. With a few changes in your attitude, a well-prepared meal and snack plan and some simple exercise goals, your new venture can show positive end results.

So whether your goal is to reduce and maintain your blood sugar levels or just to tip the scales more in your favor, sugarfree diabetic candy can be a part of all your current efforts to your new success.
