Coconut Oil: Oil from the Tropics For Making Healthy Snacks
Coconut oil, also known as coconut butter, is a tropical oil that originates from the seed of a fruit. It is commonly found growing in warm tropical climates so it is a warm free flowing liquid in its own native habitat. When the oils are extracted directly from the fruit itself this is known as virgin coconut oil, or VCO. It is by far the most precious form of this substance for use in the food and healthy snacks industry. How Do You Use VCOOne of this oil's greatest qualities in the food system is its capabilities of having an extremely long shelf life with out going rancid as is normal with other cooking and baking oils. VCO should always be kept stored at regular room temperature as it will go into a solid form if it gets cool. Therefore, many people who prefer its taste and quality will use it as a substitute for butter or margarine in its solid form.VCO Does Not Do The Following- Increase your blood cholesterol levels( it has no fatty acids in its virgin state)
- Does not promote the formation of blood clots
- Does not contribute to weight gain
- Does not contribute to atherosclerosis or heart disease
VCO Does Do This For You- VCO will reduce your risk of heart disease and other degenerative conditions
- VCO helps prevent and reduces the risk of bacterial, viral and fungal infections(this includes yeast infections)
- VCO helps control the swings in blood sugar levels in diabetics
- VCO supports and maintains a stronger immune system
- VCO promotes weight loss (by supplying fewer calories than other common fats and oils)
- VCO has a long shelf life at room temperature with high heat resistance when used in cooking
- VCO is popular for use in the cosmetic industry by helping to obtain smooth and supple skin, helps to reduce the itching and scaling of eczema, reduces the risk of skin cancer and blemishes, and it prevents the wrinkling, drying and cracking of skin
Is There Side Effects When Using VCO?VCO does contain lauric acid. This is an anti-bacterial, anti-protozoal and anti-viral compound which helps to cleanse the system of any offending organisms. You will see an immediate bout of diarrhea until everything is flushed from your system. To reduce this temporary inconvenience, break up the recommended daily dosage of 3-4 tablespoons and consume it with meals for the first few days. If you notice unusual side effects reduce your daily intake to smaller quantities. Some people do seem to show signs of an intolerance or a possible allergic reaction. The Food and Drug Administration recently classified coconut oil as a tree nut allergen even though it is not a nut, it is a palm (fruit) oil. Some people do seem to be sensitive to this type of oil, so discuss this with your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms. Why Do I Always Hear Saturated Fat Is A Bad Thing?VCO is a saturated fat but it does not raise your blood cholesterol levels, only hydrogenated oil does this. (Hydrogenation is a man-made process where hydrogen molecules are added which results in a product solid at room temperature.) The end result is the oils are chemically altered with results that they are now high in trans fatty acids. Trans fatty acids will lead to much higher serum blood cholesterol levels in the human body.Due to the decades of mis-leading and incorrect reporting, it has been the understanding for decades that all saturated fats are to be avoided. It is now finally starting to come out that hydrogenated saturated fats are the "evil" culprit in our search for a way to prevent health problems associated with coconut oils. VCO or virgin quality oils do not fit into this same category that has been leading to years of weight gain and higher cholesterol levels in the human body.
