Casein Free:
Managing A Milk Allergy
With A Selection Of Healthy Snacks

Trying to find an assortment of healthy snacks which are casein free? Casein comes from the Latin word caseus, meaning cheese. Approximately 80% of the proteins found in cow's milk are derived from the casein protein. Although it is possible for the dairy sensitive individual to be allergic to both of the main milk proteins (casein or whey), the majority of people seem to be affected by casein more frequently.

Casein Free Plus Gluten Free

Casein does have a molecular structure very similar to gluten. Therefore it is not unusual for anyone on a gluten free diet to also have to watch their dairy intake also. So other than the obvious milk, cheese, butter etc., any ingredient label that says sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate or milk protein must be avoided also.

Is There A Link Between Autism and Ingesting Milk Proteins and Gluten

No effective double-blinded studies have been carried out to date to document the outcome, but many doctors and nutritionists, parents and care-givers will swear that a gluten free, dairy free diet does help many children diagnosed with Autism.

Remember though, you are removing two entirely different food groups from a child's diet. This will lead to major nutritional deficiencies in the future if care is not taken now to prevent this. By going dairy free your child must get sufficient stores of calcium and Vitamin D.

A gluten free diet will require supplementation of their iron reserves. A deficiency in either of these will lead to more health issues in the future. It is imperative you work closely with a doctor or nutritionist for helpful guidance to prevent any nutritional or health problems arising in the future.

Products Available Which Are Commonly Considered Safe

The following list of items are generally considered casein free. Several items have special notations to cross check before use, but every item should always be checked before being consumed anyway.

  • Coconut butter or coconut milk

  • Ghee (check label but many are casein free)

  • Italian sorbets

  • Mocha mix

  • Pareve cream and creamers (Kosher pareve foods are generally considered milk protein free - for the very highly allergic though I recommend taking this item in very small quantities to start. A very tiny amount of milk protein may be present because of the use of fillers)

  • Rice, soy, or potato-based milk

  • Sorbet

  • Soy ice cream (not all flavors- check label)

  • Soymage cheese

As with any food sensitivity, keeping a careful watchful eye on ingredient labels will ensure you and your family's health and safety.
