Learning all about candy making is a wise idea for those with serious food allergies. The reality is that candy bars, hard candies and even old time, nostalgic treats can be edible bombs for people who suffer from a variety of sensitivities.

While candy makers do go to great lengths to cater to those with allergies, sometimes issues arise or consumers are unaware of code words for ingredients. There are a variety of conditions that candy bars, peppermint sweets, hearts and even rock and retro candies can wreak havoc with.

Ultimately, it is up to an allergy sufferer to watch out for troublesome ingredients and keep an eye open for potential allergens. Candy makers try, but often are unable to fully guarantee allergen-free treats.

Candy Making And Cross Contamination

Big candy companies like Hershey, Cadbury and others make their confections in large factory settings. While a particular brand of candy bar might not have an allergen in the mix, there is a risk for cross contamination.

This occurs when particles of one food product are accidentally blended into another. This can occur through airborne contact, in some cases, and from the use of the same equipment to make a variety of different candies. Think of chopped nuts, for example, and it is very easy to see how small nut dust particles can easily make their way into other products.

Cross contamination is also a concern with Halloween candies and gift baskets that might contain multiple food items. Even when wrapped, for example, candy with nuts can seep nut oils onto other wrappers or food products.

Who Needs To Watch Out For Candy?

Candy can be a real concern for people with a variety of conditions. Some of the most common conditions that can make candy a real concern include:

  • Dairy allergies and lactose intolerance

  • Diabetes

  • Egg allergies

  • Peanut and tree nut allergies

  • Celiac disease, which prevents the consumption of gluten

  • Dye allergies

  • Soy allergies

Staying Safe With A Sweet Tooth

There are two main ways for people with allergies or other conditions to enjoy candy without fear of medical repercussions. They are:

  • Carefully reading labels and researching products – Take the time to research products and understand all the ingredients used in the mix. It doesn’t hurt to find out what other foods might be made in contact with a confection, as well.

  • Using only homemade products – This is perhaps the best way to avoid contamination with allergens. It is fairly easy to make certain confections at home, using ingredient substitutes where necessary.

All about candy making is a topic that people with allergies must pay particularly close attention to. Even seemingly innocent candy bars and hard candies can contain the offending allergens by pure accident even though safety parameters are in position to try and prevent just such occurences.
