Avoid Milk Protein
And Still Finding Safe
And Healthy Snacks

The life task to avoid milk protein but still find some healthy snacks if you have an allergy or intolerance can be a challenge.

The following is a general chart listing common names or products that normally contain the milk protein.

Read down this list and as you are reading ingredient labels, if you see any of these items avoid this product.

It is not safe for you to consume.

This list is by no means complete. You will need to be vigilant in order to avoid milk protein.

Manufacturers are re-formulating their products at all times. If you see something you do not recognize, either contact the manufacturer or contact your doctor before eating it to verify its safety.

Watch for these items in a product label in order to avoid milk protein:

  • All dairy foods- ice cream, milk, butter, cheese, sour cream cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

  • Artificial butter or butter flavorings

  • Baked goods- check label

  • Breads

  • Buttermilk

  • Buttered, creamed, scalloped, au gratin dishes

  • Canned tuna with casein

  • Caesar salad or dressing

  • Caramel Color- lactose may have been added to get the deep rich color

  • Casein or caseinates

  • Cereals(pre-cooked)

  • Cheese

  • Chewing gum- check all labels, often added now by many gum manufacturers

  • Chicken broth- check canned and bouillon cubes

  • Cosmetics-check label

  • Cream soups, bisques, chowders

  • Curds

  • Drugs, medications- check label

  • Eggnog, milk shake, malts

  • Ghee, clarified butter

  • Grout(for your bathtub)-check label

  • Half-in-half

  • High Protein flour

  • Household paint- check label

  • Hydrolysates

  • Lactalbumin, lactalbumin phosphates

  • Lactoglobulin

  • Lactose

  • Margarine- check label

  • Naturalose- a new sweetener (chemical name tagatose) that is being used more frequently which is derived from whey. It can often be found in foods, drinks, snacks, mouthwash and toothpaste.

  • Nisin

  • Non-dairy creamer, whipped topping (most contain casein)

  • Nougat

  • Pancakes, waffles, french toast- check label

  • Pet foods- check label

  • Processed meats, luncheon meats

  • Puddings, custard

  • Recaldent

  • Rennet casein

  • Salad dressing, Mayonnaise- check label

  • School, craft glue

  • Souffles

  • Whey, whey protein

  • Wine - casein is often added during the clarifying process to remove impurities

  • Yogurt

Milk in the following forms is off-limits: Condensed, derivatives, dry powdered, evaporated, low-fat, milk from any animal, malted, non-fat, protein, skim, solids or whole milk.

During the first stages, after diagnosis, do not worry if you are nervous or scared about your immediate future. The hardest part will be upcoming within the next few weeks as you try to understand what you may have in your diet- and therefore what is necessary for you to stay away from. Copy this list and keep this form with you as you go grocery shopping, go out to eat, or anywhere that you know you must remember - "Is that item on my Dairy Allergy not safe list?"
