Avoid Gluten Protein

The life task to avoid gluten protein if you have an allergy or intolerance can be a challenge. The following is a general chart listing common names and products that normally contain gluten proteins or wheat proteins. Read down this list and as you are reading ingredient labels, if you see any of these avoid this product. It is not safe for you to consume.

This list is by no means complete. You will need to be vigilant in order to avoid gluten protein. Manufacturers are re-formulating their products at all times. If you see something you do not recognize, check with the manufacturer or your doctor first to verify its safety.

Watch for these items in a product label in order to avoid gluten protein:

  • Ale

  • Amylase

  • Artificial Color or Artificial Flavors- check with the manufacturer to find out what this is- it really could be anything

  • Aspartame (can cause IBS symptoms in the sensitive individual)

  • Barley, Rye or Wheat

  • Beer

  • Bouillon, broth

  • Bran

  • Bread crumbs

  • Breaded or fried foods

  • Bromated flour

  • Brown rice syrup

  • Brown sugar or brown sugar flavoring

  • Bulgar

  • Caramel color

  • Cereal binding or cereal extract

  • Dry cereals

  • Chip and dip mixes

  • Communion wafers

  • Couscous

  • Cracked wheat

  • Cracker meal or plain crackers (check ingredient label)

  • Creamed or breaded vegetables

  • Dextrin-(maltodextrin is OK)

  • All Dry-roasted nuts-(they are processed with wheat flour)

  • Durum flour, durum wheat

  • Enriched flour, any "enriched" product

  • Farina

  • Flavored coffee, instant coffee- check label

  • Filler- must check with company to find out what was used

  • Food dyes- must check with manufacturer

  • French fries- unless you make them yourself at home- all commercial products do have a wheat based coating

  • Frosting- often has a flour for additive

  • Gravies, sauces, marinades

  • Gluten

  • Graham flour

  • Hot chocolate mix

  • Hot dogs-check label

  • Herbal teas- check label

  • hydrolyzed vegetable protein

  • Ice cream- check label

  • Imitation bacon bits, crab or any imitation seafood product

  • Malt, malt flavorings

  • Mango, any items containing mango

  • Matzoh,matzo,matzoh meal

  • Marshmallow, marshmallow creme products- check label

  • Modified food starch(modified corn starch OK)

  • MSG, monosodium glutamate

  • Mustard powder- often uses grain as an extender

  • Natural flavoring- check with mfg., can be wheat, corn, soy, tree nut etc

  • Non-dairy creamers, dairy substitutes

  • Pasta and rice mixes

  • Peanut butter- check with doctor- fresh ground usually OK

  • Phosphated flour

  • Any product on label identified as a "Protein"

  • Salad dressings- check label

  • Mixed seasonings(plain spices OK)

  • Seasoned tortilla chips

  • Seitan

  • Semolina

  • Self-basting turkey

  • Soup mixes, canned soups

  • Soy sauce

  • Soft cheese, spreads and dips

  • Spelt, Triticale

  • Sprouted wheat

  • Sulfites

  • Thickeners

  • Vegetable gum, vegetable starch

  • Vitale, vital gluten

  • Wheat free products-check label- may contain gluten

  • Wheat, rye, barley grains

  • Whole wheat berries

  • Worcestershire sauce

  • Yogurt with wheat starch- check label

Many flour varieties are now available on the market. In order to avoid gluten proteins, you must avoid the following list of items: All-purpose, bread, durum, cake, enriched, graham, high gluten, high protein, instant, pastry, self-rising, soft wheat, steel ground, stone ground, whole wheat flour.

During the first stages, after diagnosis, do not worry if you are nervous or scared about your immediate future. The hardest part will be upcoming in the next few weeks as you try to understand what you may have in your diet- and therefore what is necessary for you to stay away from. Copy this list and keep it with you as you go grocery shopping, go out to eat, or anywhere that you know you must remember "Is that item on my Gluten Proteins not safe list?"
