Avoid Egg Protein:
Managing Your Diet By
Finding Safe Healthy Snacks

The life task to avoid egg protein or to just find healthy snacks if you have an allergy or intolerance can be a challenge. The following is a general chart listing names or products that normally contain egg protein. Read down this list and as you are reading ingredient labels, if you see any of these avoid the product. It is not safe for you to consume.

This list is by no means complete. You will need to be vigilant in order to avoid egg protein. Manufacturers are re-formulating their products at all times. If you see something you do not recognize, either contact the manufacturer or your doctor before eating it to verify its safety.

Watch for these items in a product label in order to avoid egg protein:

  • Albumin, albumen

  • Some alcoholic beverages(foam on the top)

  • Baked goods, breads

  • Battered, fried meats and vegetables

  • Binder

  • Bread crumbs

  • Clear glaze (on anything- usually egg whites)

  • Coagulant

  • Coffee- specialty flavors

  • Custards, puddings- check label

  • Drinks- eggnog, Ovaltine, Orange Julius

  • Eggs, including egg substitutes

  • Egg replacer, check label, some have egg whites

  • Egg noodles, pasta- check label

  • Emulsifier

  • Flu Vaccine

  • Globulin

  • Hollandaise sauce

  • Lecithin (can be egg or soy)

  • Livetin

  • Lysozyme

  • Marshmallows, marzipan, nougat

  • Marshmallow creme- check label

  • Mayonnaise- check label, some are egg free

  • Meatballs, Meatloaf, sausage, crab cakes etc.- any item(s) that need a binder to hold them together

  • Meringue, meringue powder

  • All products or words starting with Ovo or Ova (Ovalbumin,ovomucin, or ovomucoid)

  • Pancakes and waffles

  • Silicoalbuminate

  • Simplesse- a fat replacement

  • Soups, canned or boxed- check label

  • Soup with egg noodles or pasta

  • Tartar sauce

  • Vegetables frozen in sauce- check label

  • Vitellin

  • Yolk

During the first stages, after diagnosis, do not worry if you are nervous or scared about your immediate future. The hardest part will be upcoming within the next few weeks as you try to understand what you may have in your diet- and therefore what it is necessary for you to stay away from. Copy this list and keep this form with you as you go grocery shopping, go out to eat, or anywhere that you know you must remember - "Is that item on my Egg Allergy not safe list?"
