Avoid Corn Protein
By Watching Your Diet
And Choosing Healthy Snacks

The life task to avoid corn protein or to find healthy snacks if you have an allergy or intolerance can be a challenge. The following is a general listing of names or products that normally contain the Corn protein. Read down this list and as you are reading ingredient labels, if you see any of these on a label, then avoid the product, as it is not safe for you to consume.

This list is by no means complete. You will need to be vigilant in order to avoid corn protein. Manufacturers are re-formulating their products at all times. If you see something you do not recognize, either contact the manufacturer or your doctor before eating to verify its safety.

Watch for these items in a product label in order to avoid corn protein:

  • Adhesives(postage stamps, envelopes, tape, stickers)

  • Ascetic acid

  • Alcohol

  • Artificial Flavorings

  • Artificial sweeteners (most are from a species of the corn plant)

  • Baking powder

  • Blueberries, frozen( coating added during processing)

  • Body powder

  • Bounce dryer sheets

  • Breath sprays

  • Brown sugar(OK if no caramel coloring added)

  • Candied or dried fruits

  • Caramel or caramel color

  • Charcoal briquettes

  • Chicken ( feed is usually corn based)

  • Citric acid (always either fruit or corn based-fruit OK)

  • Coffee- instant and regular

  • Condiments- ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise-check all labels)

  • Confectioner's(10X or 6X) sugar

  • Contact lens solution

  • Any word with corn in it- corn gluten, corn alcohol, corn starch, corn meal, corn flour, corn oil, corn margarine etc.

  • Cosmetics- check all labels

  • Cranberries- frozen, added during processing

  • Cream

  • Dairy products- cottage cheese, sour cream, cheese- check label

  • Dental fillings- you must notify the doctor of your allergy

  • Processed deli meats, sausages, hot dogs etc.

  • Dextrose or Glucose- IV fluids

  • Dishwashing detergent

  • Distilled white vinegar

  • Erythritol

  • Ethanol

  • Evaporated milk

  • Flavorings- must be checked- can be corn, fruit, nut, peanut, soy or from any other source)

  • Food starch

  • Frozen vegetables- added during processing- must check labels

  • Fructose

  • Fruit juice concentrates- check label

  • Germ, germ meal

  • Glucosamine

  • Glucose, glucose syrup

  • Glutamate

  • Gluten, gluten meal

  • Glycerin

  • Grits

  • Hair products- shampoos, conditioners, rinses etc.- must check labels

  • Hand lotion with Vitamin E

  • Hawaiian Punch

  • HFCS- high fructose corn syrup

  • Hi-C drinks

  • Hominy

  • Honey

  • Hydrolyzed corn protein (HCP)

  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)

  • Ice cream- check labels

  • Infant formulas

  • Invert sugar, invert syrup

  • Iodized salt

  • Lactic acid

  • Lecithin- can be corn or soy

  • Maize

  • Malt, malt syrup or extract

  • Maltitol

  • Maltodextrin

  • Mannitol

  • Margarine, corn-based, check label

  • Medications, most coated pills are corn based

  • Milk

  • Modified corn starch

  • Modified food starch

  • Molasses- check the label and see if corn syrup is present

  • Mono and diglycerides

  • Natural flavorings- check with the manufacturer- these can be corn,soy,nut, peanut etc. based

  • Olestra

  • Orange juice- check label

  • Paper cups, paper plates- coating on them is corn based

  • Peanut butter- check label

  • Pesticides- powdered version

  • Pickles

  • Plastic containers

  • Polenta

  • Pork

  • Ricotta cheese

  • Saccharin

  • Salad dressings- check labels

  • Semolina (wheat semolina OK)

  • Sherbert

  • Soap- check label

  • Sodium citrate

  • Sorbic acid

  • Sorbitol

  • Any "Starch" product

  • Strong odor items are generally manufactured from corn alcohol: candles, perfumes, colognes, room spray, hand and body lotions, potpourri etc.

  • Succotash

  • Sugar(OK if it is cane or beet sugar)

  • Suntan lotion

  • Teas- check labels

  • Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

  • many Toiletries

  • Tomato, processed

  • Toothpaste- check labels

  • Treacle, golden syrup

  • Tuna fish ( packed in corn based water/oil)

  • All Vanilla flavorings- pure or extracts

  • Vanillin

  • Vitamin C and Vitamin E products - if the label reads these are included, avoid these products

  • Waxed fruit and vegetables

  • Xanthum gum

  • Xylitol

  • Yeast- check label

During the first stages, after diagnosis of corn allergy or intolerance, do not worry if you are nervous or scared about your immediate future. Learn to avoid corn protein. The hardest part will be upcoming in the next few weeks as you try to understand what you may have in your diet - and therefore what it is necessary for you to stay away from in order to avoid corn. Copy this list and keep it with you as you go grocery shopping, go out to eat, or anywhere you know you must remember - "Is that item on my Corn Allergy not safe list?"
